The Goddess
Considered the most famous actress of the Chinese silent film era, Ruan Ling-yu’s life and work symbolized the social currents of Shanghai. In this 1934 film, Ruan Ling-Yu plays a prostitute who uses her earnings to support and educate her son. “The Goddess” was the Shanghai way of describing a woman who sells her body.
Prior to the screening, Dr. Richard Meyer, President Emeritus of the San Francisco Silent Film Festival, Seattle University film professor and Visiting Professor at the Center for Journalism and Media Studies at the University of Hong Kong will speak about the Shanghai film industry.
