• Brantford was named for Mohawk leader, Joseph Thayendanegea Brant.  Allies of the British during the American War of independence, the Six Nations Iroquois received extensive lands along the Grand River. In 1784 Brant brought his tribes from upper New York State to the Grand River basin where they crossed the river to reach their new homeland.  The area of crossing became known as Brant’s ford and the village subsequently built there became known as Brantford.
• Originally called St. Paul’s, Her Majesty’s Royal Chapel of the Mohawks was the first Protestant church built in Ontario and is now the oldest surviving church in Ontario.
  It is also the first Royal Chapel to belong to native people, the only Royal Chapel in North America.
• Inventor Alexander Graham Bell brought fame to Brantford when he invented the telephone on July 26th, 1874.  He made the first-ever long distance phone call on August 10th, 1876.
• Proud to be the hometown of “The Great One,” Wayne Gretzky, born on January 26, 1961.  During his illustrious career, he became the National Hockey League’s all-time leading scorer.
