Our Town: Brantford
Saturday, December 12th, 2009, at 6:30pm on WNED-TV

“There’s a lot more to explore.  I wanted to … give people a little taste and whet their appetite.” David Simpson  (Topic: historic sites)

“It’s a nice town … it’s very real. We’re not fancy or anything, but we have a lot going for us.”
Peter Muir (Topic: Brant Theatre’s production of Dracula at the Bell Homestead)

Located on the Grand River in Southern Ontario, The Telephone City has been home to Mohawk settlers; inventor Alexander Graham Bell; and hockey great Wayne Gretzky.

In October 2009, 32 current residents captured some of Brantford’s foremost “points of pride” for OUR TOWN: Brantford, WNED’s 14th community “video scrapbook” production.

As these volunteer videographers show through their film footage, Brantford has carefully preserved both its storied past and its natural beauty. In this city of about 90,000 people, bald eagles – as well as the historic downtown core – are making a comeback.

Discover what makes Brantford a special place to live or visit ― from its coveted riverfront, to a distinctive college campus occupying former industrial spaces, to a restored Vaudeville theatre, and much more!

Our Town:  Brantford will premiere Saturday, December 12th at 6:30pm.

  • Population: 96,689
  • Brantford was named for Mohawk leader, Joseph Thayendanegea Brant.  Allies of the British during the American War of independence, the Six Nations Iroquois received extensive lands along the Grand River. In 1784 Brant brought his tribes from upper New York State to the Grand River basin where they crossed the river to reach their new homeland.  The area of crossing became known as Brant’s ford and the village subsequently built there became known as Brantford.
  • Originally called St. Paul’s, Her Majesty’s Royal Chapel of the Mohawks was the first Protestant church built in Ontario and is now the oldest surviving church in Ontario.
It is also the first Royal Chapel to belong to native people, the only Royal Chapel in North America.
  • Inventor Alexander Graham Bell brought fame to Brantford when he invented the telephone on July 26th, 1874.  He made the first-ever long distance phone call on August 10th, 1876.
  • Proud to be the hometown of “The Great One,” Wayne Gretzky, born on January 26, 1961.  During his illustrious career, he became the National Hockey League’s all-time leading scorer.
