In 1969, New England Aquarium was founded to provide something interesting and attractive to people both in the city and beyond. Today, the Boston waterfront bustles with activities and tourists. The idea of an aquarium as an economic and redevelopment engine worked and New England Aquarium set the stage for other cities to use the idea of an aquarium for economic redevelopment.

Designed by famed aquarium architect Peter Chermayeff, New England Aquarium offers visitors a series of living exhibits viewed in along a one-way path. The featured tank at the Aquarium holds over 700 animals and 130 different species. Fifty-two large windows allow visitors multi-level views of sea turtles, eels, sharks, and other tropic fish typically found on a Caribbean coral reef.

The aquarium also features a one of the few aquatic medical centers in the country. Built behind glass walls, the facility treats animals and also serves to educate the public. Over the years, the aquarium has rescued and rehabilitated around 500 turtles, a significant portion of the population of this threatened species.
