Position Description

 

Position Title:  Corporate Development Sales Representative

Department:    Marketing & Sales

Reports To: Vice President of Marketing & Sales

Status:             Full Time, Exempt

Summary:

The Corporate Development Sales Representative is responsible for securing revenue from broadcast, online, sponsorship events and other media opportunities as they become available, from local, regional and national business accounts. The Corporate Development Sales Representative must possess the skill and desire necessary to develop new revenue accounts, and submit weekly and monthly reports of local sales activity to the Vice President of Marketing & Sales.  Must meet and surpass budgetary and non-budgetary goals.

Job responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Maintain monthly and quarterly sales pacing to reach annual sales budgetary goals
  • Prospect for new leads and potential underwriters, advertisers, production funders direct and through advertising agencies in the business community locally, regionally and nationally
  • Initiate and obtain meetings for relationship building resulting in sales proposals with prospects and current underwriters in the business community locally, regionally and nationally
  • Use audience research and data to include in presentations, creating and proposing multi-platform sponsorship opportunities for potential and current clients
  • Attend client lunches/dinners and community outreach initiatives where applicable
  • Participate in on-going sales training
  • Stay abreast of market trends and competitive activity in commercial and public radio, television and online media sales
  • Help secure funding in conjunction with other departments as opportunities are presented
  • Comply with all WNED/WBFO policies and guidelines
  • Work with Vice-President of Sales and Marketing to obtain on-air and web copy approval
  • Use of a computer, telephone and other office and/or broadcast equipment; possessing the ability to communicate effectively through a variety of methods is required
  • Ability to work extended hours as needed, including some evenings and weekends
  • Submit weekly and monthly reports as required of local sales activity and projections to the Vice President of Marketing & Sales.
  • Other duties as assigned

 Qualifications:

§  Bachelor’s degree or satisfactory equivalent experience required

§  Minimum 2-3 years of media sales experience required; radio, television, online or print sales preferred

§  Requires prior experience building and maintaining relationships with both internal and external contacts

§  Excellent negotiation and decision-making skills required

§  Excellent communication and presentation skills—both oral and written—with an impressive reputation for building and maintaining relationships with people at all levels of an organization, across a diverse range of cultural, generational, ethnic, racial, educational and social backgrounds

§  Verifiable track record of successful sales

§  Requires a passion for generating new business, excellent customer service skills

§  Must be results-oriented, self-motivated and professional with impeccable business ethics

§  Proficient user Microsoft Office products required

§  Positive, can do attitude

§  Ability to multi-task

§  Work under deadlines

Position Title: Corporate Communications Assistant

Department:   Corporate Communications & Promotion

Position Summary:

Responsible for administrative duties in the WNED/WBFO Corporate Communications Department.  Assist with press release distribution, media tracking and advertising placements/requests.

 

Responsibilities Include:                                                                                

  • Provides administrative support to Corporate Communication staff  including mailings, postcards and coordinates RSVP’s for station events.  Management of program and business files and fulfillment of media requests for promotional materials. Track and process department expenditures and invoices. Maintains WNED clip file and ad tear sheets. Responsible for generating advertisement requests to Graphics Dept. and reserving advertisement space for local media outlets.  Distribute press releases to area media and maintain/update media databases. Coordinate WNED Horizon Gallery.  Timekeeper for department’s attendance records.  Supplies POP information to Foundations and Underwriting. Inputs web content onto wned.org.     
  •   Assist in covering WNED main front desk                                      
  • Other duties as assigned.                                                                                                                                                      

Qualifications and Education Required:

  • Associate’s degree or two years of college in marketing, communications or business.
  • Minimum of two years experience is preferred, ideally in media and/or non-profit setting.
  • Proficient computer skills, including the Microsoft Office Suite, are required.
  • Strong writing, grammar and spelling skills essential.
  •  Strong verbal communication skills necessary.
  • Accuracy and attention to detail are a must. 
  •  Must have the ability to work under constant deadlines and strong organizational skills.
  •  Must be a team player.

To oversee development of relationships with foundations, corporate giving programs, and government agencies; ensure payment and stewardship of major donor commitments to the capital campaign; serve as WNED liaison with PBS on program underwriting and funder recognition and to assist and support the work of other non-profits in the region.                      

Responsibilities Include:                                                                          

  • To oversee the development of grant proposals to local,                               

regional and national foundations, corporations, and

government agencies for funding projects and undertaking

of WNYPBA; and that the terms and conditions of grants

are being met within the organization, including final reports

on the execution of grants, as required by the grantor.

  • To assist in the design and implementation of capital solicitation                 

campaigns for major WNED projects.

  • To be the liaison with PBS for all discussions regarding program                

underwriting and funder recognition.

  • To assist and support the work of other non-profits in the region,                

including development of collaborations with WNED and guidance

in the development and implementation of capital campaigns.

  • Perform other assignments as assigned by the President & CEO.               

Qualifications and Education Required:

Position Title:  Receptionist (2 part-time positions)

Department: Facilities

Reports To: Vice President of Finance, CFO

Status: Part-Time/Non-Exempt

 

I. Summary

Answers all incoming phone calls in a courteous manner and directs calls to appropriate department or individual.  Greets station visitors and announces them to the person or department that they are visiting.  Receives all packages and messenger deliveries arriving at the stations.  Adheres to all building security policies of the organization.

II. Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Telephone related duties, call answering, etc.  
  2. Greet and direct visitors to appropriate department.
  3. Receive packages and deliveries.
  4. Assist with other clerical related duties, such as timesheets,  office supply ordering, bulk mailings, etc.
  5. Make refunds for vending machines. 
  6. Other duties as needed.                                                                                         

III.  Qualifications and Education Required 

  • High School diploma.
  • Strong familiarity with telephone and voice mail system capabilities and features.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. 
  • Must possess exceptional interpersonal skills.
  • Easy going demeanor and ability to deal with difficult callers and visitors without rudeness or irritation.
  • Ability to stay calm and organized when situations demand it.

Director of News & Public Affairs

Position Title:      Director of News & Public Affairs

I.                   Summary:  

 

The News Director is responsible for the management of WBFO Radio and the news department and ensures the highest journalistic standards and public service ethics are met. Supervises all news gathering activity, in charge of day-to-day operations of the newsroom, and sets policy & procedures for news department staff.  The News Director is responsible for overseeing the news and public affairs content of local programs produced by WNED-TV. Working with senior management, creates and implements the vision, strategy and plan to enable WBFO to be a valued and critical community news and information service. Works with other departments on cross platform projects related to news and public affairs, creating high quality news and information programming for broadcast, web and mobile.

 

II.  Duties & Responsibilities:                                                                             % Time Spent

 

  1. Oversees the operation of WBFO, including the full day program                            70%

schedule, local programming and production, and the 24/7 news gathering

operation; oversees all WBFO new and digital media activities; maintains

budgets, develops procedures & policies for station operations, evaluates

staff development & performance; schedules staff; makes hiring

recommendations;  plans and administers departmental and project budgets;

works with development department to coordinate on-air fund drives. 

 

  1. Establishes and maintains partnerships with other news and community                  5%

organizations to further WNYPBA goals, serves as primary contact with

NPR and other public radio entities, and represents WBFO at community

and professional events.

 

  1. Serves as a member of the President’s Staff, taking part in regular                        10%

meetings, discussions and reviews of overall organizational activities

and operations; participates in strategic planning and annual planning

for WBFO and other departments and activities.

 

  1. Oversees content and editorial standards for WNED-TV news and public                 15%

affairs programs including community forums, long form interviews,

debates and other news and public affairs programs.

 

Qualifications & Experience:

 

·         Significant journalism and reporting experience with demonstrated skills in writing, reporting and editing procedures.

·         Experience in maintaining the high journalistic standards including objectivity, balance and fairness.

·         Minimum 4-6 years of public radio experience including management or supervisory experience, but will consider combination of public and commercial radio experience.

·         Strong communications and leadership skills with a demonstrated ability to work with internal and external partners and the ability to lead, train, grow and motivate staff.

·         Knowledge of online news platforms and production.

 

·         Bachelor’s degree from accredited university in journalism, broadcasting or related field.
