El Salon Mexico

Joe Horowitz, through a grant from the NEH's Music Unwound Consortium (the same team that brought us “Dvorak in America” and “Charles Ives: An American Maverick”) has explored how Mexican music influenced “the dean of American music” - composer Aaron Copland - and how he in turn influenced a generation of Mexican composers. It’s the first of this year’s “Know the Score” concerts, at 7 p.m. this Friday night at Kleinhans Music Hall. Stefan Sanders conducts and the narrator will be WNED’s Peter Hall, with whom Joe Horowitz spoke.

Finnish violinist Elina Vahala performs the US premiere of Jaako Kuusisto's Violin Concerto, a work she commissioned. In this conversation with WNED, she describes the work as tonal and exciting, a little bit like a movie score, but never corny. The composer, a fellow violinist and personal friend of Vahala, told her that a violin concerto should be heroic and hard to play. And it is, but not for her. Elina Vahala performs with JoAnn Falletta and the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra at Kleinhans Music Hall Friday morning at 10:30 a.m. and Saturday evening, October 10, at 8 p.m.

BPO Music Director JoAnn Falletta is excited about the Kleinhans Music Hall upgrades and Finn Fest 2015 which continues this weekend with two concerts, Friday morning October 9 at 10:30 a.m. and Saturday night at 8 p.m.  She recently dropped by WNED for a chat.

The Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra kicked off its new season in style with a new concertmaster, Dennis Kim. Born in Korea but raised in Toronto, Kim spoke with WNED about the various orchestras in the world for whom he has been concertmaster or guest concertmaster.

This weekend, Buffalo begins "Finnfest," the citywide celebration of Finnish music and architecture, as we mark the Saarinen-designed Kleinhans Music Hall's 75th anniversary and the 150th birthday of Finland's musical icon, Jean Sibelius.  The Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra has invited one of Finland's stars of the piano, Juho Pohjonen, who will perform the beloved piano concerto of Norway's Edvard Grieg. Juho spoke to WNED from his home in Finland.
