Public Radio Internships

WBFO-FM 88.7 and Classical 94.5 WNED

The Western New York Public Broadcasting Association has internship openings available in both WBFO and Classical 94.5 WNED. Students will have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in radio operations and production and to develop their writing and broadcasting skills.

Job Description

Students will be assigned tasks that relate to day-to-day radio operations in the traffic, programming, and production departments and the news room. They will also be afforded the opportunity to collaborate on large scale production and broadcast projects and will be expected to assume responsibilities that are commensurate with their abilities. These projects may include the following:

News-gathering (write copy, record news conferences, etc.) for newscasts on WBFO
Production of Morning Classics, Making a List, and other classical music programs.
Production of promotional spots and underwriting credits

Requirements

Interns will develop their own semi-monthly work schedules and will be obliged to follow them.
Reliable transportation is essential.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will demonstrate the following:

An interest in public radio
A willingness to learn
The ability to work independently and to work collaboratively
The ability to write cogently
The ability to use basic office software
Previous production, journalism and/or broadcast experience is desirable, though not required!

TV Production Internship

Editor’s Assistant

The WNED Production Department enlists the services of college interns each semester (Fall, Spring, Summer) to help in the production of our public television programming.  Interns must arrange to receive credit from their college or university.

The Editor’s Assistant (internship) will be working within the Production Department at WNED-TV.  This intern will perform research, administrative duties, tape logging, preparations for edit sessions, and assist on editing projects for multiple editors and producers. Projects vary depending on edit schedules and may include; national PBS documentaries, local documentaries, television programs and specials, and often includes working with high definition television equipment.

This internship is for students with Communications/Broadcasting/Media Studies backgrounds. Previous computer based video editing helpful. Basic windows computer knowledge a must.

The intern, depending on level of ability and training, may also perform hands on editing with the Editor’s guidance on current projects, with the possibility of editing their own piece as a final project.

Students will be assigned tasks that relate to day-to-day library operations including logging, cataloguing, filing and research; they may also be afforded the opportunity to collaborate on large scale production and broadcast projects and will be expected to assume responsibilities that are commensurate with their abilities.  These projects may include the following:

  • Production of Morning Classics, Classics by Request and Making a List
  • Production of promotional spots and underwriting credits

Requirements

  • Interns will develop their own semi-monthly work schedules and will be obliged to follow them.

Marketing Communications Intern

Opportunity for college student majoring in marketing, public relations or communications with   knowledge of basic marketing principles, social media, etc. to enhance understanding of  media tracking, writing press releases/blog posts, researching industry trends, report writing, digital publication enhancing and pre-event support by serving an internship in WNED’s Corporate Communications Department.  This internship is available Summer 2012 through Spring 2013, or for one semester during that period, for 10-15 hours per week.  Student at junior or senior level is preferred.  WNED is a public television and radio station serving the Buffalo, NY and southern Ontario areas and the Corporate Communications Department is a fast-paced and deadline-driven environment.
