Digital technology will soon change the way we listen to the radio. Using the same technology that allows broadcasters to compress a television signal, FM and AM radio broadcasters can now drastically increase the sound quality and provide other great features over the same radio airwaves we have been using for more than 50 years.
Quality
Soon, using a
digital radio receiver (not to be confused with pay service of satellite radio), you will be able to listen to your favorite FM radio stations in a quality unsurpassed on radio before. Digital radio eliminates the static, hiss, pops and fades associated with today's radio signals.
Digital radio will also change the quality of AM radio. Digital AM stations will sound as rich as today’s FM stations while strengthening its broadcast signal in its coverage area.
Datacasting
Have you ever been listening to a composition on WNED’s Classical FM music station (Classical 94.5) and wonder who wrote it? Soon, through digital radio, you’ll be able to read information about the music you’re listening to on a textual display built right into your radio receiver. It could include the artist, year, and even interesting facts about the composer.
WNED’s AM News station
(WNED-AM 970)
may provide listeners with weather, stock information, traffic, and “News on Demand” right from the same digital readout on your radio.
Convenience
Tuning in to a station by its broadcast frequency may become a thing of the past. Radio listeners will be able to select a station by format, music style, station name, or even program title.
These are just a few of the revolutionary changes that digital radio will bring to radio listeners. WNED is harnessing this technology to continue the valued services of both WNED’s AM and FM radio service.
