Development/Pledge Producer

Position Title: Development/Pledge Producer 
Reports to: Senior Director, Fundraising & Special Projects
Status: Full-time, Exempt
Date: July 13, 2015

I. Summary
Develops, produces and coordinates the production and pre-production of all associated television and radio needs, including all live or pre-taped TV and radio pledge drives and TOOPS. Coordinate production aspects as they relate to individual station needs. Communicate and coordinate all aspects of campaigns to the following departments: programming, production, engineering, membership, graphics, communications and traffic.


II. Duties and Responsibilities

  1. TV and Radio Pledge drives – Develop and produce all elements needed for the production of all on-air fundraising productions on WNED-TV, WBFO and WNED Classical. Create and maintain green sheets and break sheets; schedule, train and supervise crew and talent; coordinate special guest visits; Coordinate ticket deals; work with off-site closed captioning company; coordinate set any on-air needs with graphics, including pledge stills; and coordinate and supervise studio and field shoots. Work with Senior Director to create roll-in materials, promos, and spots; produce virtual pledge events for national distribution. Assist with production of core pledge programs, and manage related activities such as editing, promos, uplinks, station relations, and talent relations. Develop, create and communicate membership messages to viewers during WNED-TV, WBFO & WNED Classical interstitial breaks outside of pledge, to support year-round fundraising efforts. (80%)

  2. Other Fundraising Productions- Assist in production and development of 7% impact spots for all stations; produce Antiques Homeshow promotion night; video needs for JoAnn Falletta International Guitar Concerto Competition; virtual pledge events for national distribution. Assist with production of core pledge programs, and manage related activities such as editing, promos, uplinks, station relations, and talent relations. (15%)

  3. Other Duties as Assigned (5%)

III. Qualifications

  • Previous experience in television production.
  • Previous Development and marketing experience preferred.
  • Superior verbal and written communications skills.
  • Superior ability to develop new fundraising events.
  • Minimum 4 years of television production.
  • Minimum 4-year college degree.
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule which includes working multiple nights, early mornings and weekends.

Director of Broadcasting

Position Description

Position Title: Director of Broadcasting

Position Summary:
The Director of Broadcasting creates and implements monthly television broadcast schedule based on PBS network program offerings, independent program acquisitions and locally produced programs for WNED and ThinkBright and Well/WORLD.  Supervises Broadcast Operations Manager, Editor/Copywriter and Viewer Services.

Responsibilities include:                                                                                           

35%         Create and implement monthly broadcast schedule including pledge schedule, schedule changes and updates.  Use US and Canadian Nielsen ratings to help in creation of schedule.  Manage and oversee program acquisition budget.  Report on ratings as needed. 

30%        Screen programs from independent producers and distributors, PBS, regional networks, and commercial syndicators for possible broadcast and pledge.

10%        Fundraising activities including Pledge Task Force and on-air talent.            

5%         Select and manage the promotional priorities for the month, and guide the overall direction of station broadcast look and design. 
Coordinate with Corporate Communications and Underwriting Departments as they relate to the TV broadcast schedule. 

10%        Supervise Broadcast Operations Manager and Editor / Copywriter             
and manage overall department.

5%         Network with professional peers to insure most innovative and creative TV broadcast schedule.

5%         Oversee WNED TV Viewer Services and participate in U.S./Canadian Border Station Consortium activities. 

Qualifications and Education Required:

  • Five years experience in public television programming with at least three years in a supervisory role.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Nielsen audience research data withability to analyze and evaluate.
  • Knowledge and understanding of word processing and computer skills.
  • Effective communication skills necessary.
  • College degree required.

Position Summary:

To oversee development of relationships with foundations, corporate giving programs, and government agencies; ensure payment and stewardship of major donor commitments to the capital campaign; serve as WNED|WBFO liaison with PBS on program underwriting and funder recognition and to assist and support the work of other non-profits in the region.


Responsibilities Include:                                                                                  


•To oversee the development of grant proposals to local,                                   

regional and national foundations, corporations, and 

government agencies for funding projects and undertakings

of WNED|WBFO; ensure that the terms and conditions of grants

are being met within the organization, including interim and final reports

as required by the grantor.


•To assist in the design, implementation and stewardship of capital 

solicitation campaigns for major WNED|WBFO projects                                          


•To be the liaison with PBS for all discussions regarding program                           

underwriting and funder recognition.


•To assist and support the work of other non-profits in the region,                          

including development of collaborations with WNED|WBFO and guidance

in the development and implementation of capital campaigns.


•Perform other assignments as assigned by the President & CEO.                          


Qualifications and Education Required:

•Bachelors Degree

•Minimum five years experience in writing and communications, sales or fundraising with particular emphasis on grant writing for non-profit organizations.

•Strong writing, verbal, interpersonal and organizational skills essential.

•Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, PowerPoint, Access and Excel desirable.

Director of News & Public Affairs

I.                   Summary:  


The News Director is responsible for the management of WBFO Radio and the news department and ensures the highest journalistic standards and public service ethics are met. Supervises all news gathering activity, in charge of day-to-day operations of the newsroom, and sets policy & procedures for news department staff.  The News Director is responsible for overseeing the news and public affairs content of local programs produced by WNED-TV. Working with senior management, creates and implements the vision, strategy and plan to enable WBFO to be a valued and critical community news and information service. Works with other departments on cross platform projects related to news and public affairs, creating high quality news and information programming for broadcast, web and mobile.


II.  Duties & Responsibilities:                                                                             % Time Spent


  1. Oversees the operation of WBFO, including the full day program                            70%

schedule, local programming and production, and the 24/7 news gathering

operation; oversees all WBFO new and digital media activities; maintains

budgets, develops procedures & policies for station operations, evaluates

staff development & performance; schedules staff; makes hiring

recommendations;  plans and administers departmental and project budgets;

works with development department to coordinate on-air fund drives. 


  1. Establishes and maintains partnerships with other news and community                  5%

organizations to further WNYPBA goals, serves as primary contact with

NPR and other public radio entities, and represents WBFO at community

and professional events.


  1. Serves as a member of the President’s Staff, taking part in regular                           10%

meetings, discussions and reviews of overall organizational activities

and operations; participates in strategic planning and annual planning

for WBFO and other departments and activities.


  1. Oversees content and editorial standards for WNED-TV news and public              15%

affairs programs including community forums, long form interviews,

debates and other news and public affairs programs.


Qualifications & Experience:


·         Significant journalism and reporting experience with demonstrated skills in writing, reporting and editing procedures.

·         Experience in maintaining the high journalistic standards including objectivity, balance and fairness.

·         Minimum 4-6 years of public radio experience including management or supervisory experience, but will consider combination of public and commercial radio experience.

·         Strong communications and leadership skills with a demonstrated ability to work with internal and external partners and the ability to lead, train, grow and motivate staff.

·         Knowledge of online news platforms and production.


·         Bachelor’s degree from accredited university in journalism, broadcasting or related field.

Public Radio Internships

WBFO-FM 88.7 and Classical 94.5 WNED

The Western New York Public Broadcasting Association has internship openings available in both WBFO and Classical 94.5 WNED. Students will have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in radio operations and production and to develop their writing and broadcasting skills.

Job Description

Students will be assigned tasks that relate to day-to-day radio operations in the traffic, programming, and production departments and the news room. They will also be afforded the opportunity to collaborate on large scale production and broadcast projects and will be expected to assume responsibilities that are commensurate with their abilities. These projects may include the following:

News-gathering (write copy, record news conferences, etc.) for newscasts on WBFO
Production of Morning Classics, Making a List, and other classical music programs.
Production of promotional spots and underwriting credits


Interns will develop their own semi-monthly work schedules and will be obliged to follow them.
Reliable transportation is essential.


The successful candidate will demonstrate the following:

The ability to work independently and to work collaboratively
The ability to write cogently
The ability to use basic office software
Previous production, journalism and/or broadcast experience is desirable, though not required!
