- The JoAnn Falletta International Guitar Concerto Competition, presented by WNED and the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, will present its third biennial competition June 9-13, 2008 at Buffalo's Kleinhans Music Hall. Ten of the best classical guitarists in the world will visit Buffalo and compete for a prize package that includes a paid return engagement with the Buffalo PHilharmonic Orchestra. Also a new program has been designed in conjunction with the event titled "Adopt a Competitor" where a corporation or individual sponsors and hosts a single performer thus "adopting" him or her during his or her stay in Buffalo. The "Locust Street" Story
"Locust Street" is a non-profit organization that offers free instruction in the visual arts (painting, drawing, clay, photography) and creative writing for all age groups (preschoolers to senior citizens). Intended for those who might otherwise have little opportunity to pursue creative training, classes are held in a historic former convent on Buffalo's East Side at 138 Locust Street. Students come from throughout the Buffalo area, but primarily from the immediate Fruit Belt neighborhood. The organization began in 1959 when neighborhood children knocked on the door of artist Molly Bethel and asked her to teach them how to paint. "Painting parties" held in her home quickly overflowed with children, and program offerings soon expanded.
