Nineteen years after joining The Buffalo News as an intern reporter, Lackawanna native Margaret Sullivan became the paper’s sixth editor in chief – the only woman to hold that position in the institution’s 130-year history. Among her accomplishments, Sullivan established the paper’s first investigative reporting team and led the development of the region’s leading media Web site.
Under Sullivan’s leadership, The Buffalo News has earned the Distinguished Community Service award from the state publishers association for six of the past eight years. These awards recognized outstanding reporting on poverty, school inequity and Buffalo’s struggling economy.
On the national level, Sullivan serves as a director of the American Society of News Editors. She currently co-chairs the society’s Leadership Development Committee and previously led its First Amendment Committee.
This Buffalo City Forum event costs $20 ($15 for members of WNED or Leadership Buffalo). Advanced registration is encouraged; RSVPs are required for lunch by Fri., Dec. 3. Tickets are available from Leadership Buffalo [(716) 849-2626, ext. 17 or firstname.lastname@example.org].
