WNED announced that the 6th annual Can-Am Corporate Golf Challenge, planned for September, has been cancelled due to the loss of sponsorship support. The nonprofit public broadcasting company will revisit the event for 2009.

Annually for the past five years, this unique tournament served as a camaraderie-building, business networking event for golfers from both sides of the border. Team Canada won the first two tournaments and Team USA took the past three.

Proceeds have benefited the member-supported radio and television stations of the Western New York Public Broadcasting Association, which air in both the U.S. and Canada.

“We thank all who participated for their commitment to public broadcasting,” said Donald K. Boswell, WNED President and CEO. “The Can-Am Corporate Golf Challenge would never have been a success without the generous support of our players and sponsors.

“Although we’re sorry to suspend the Golf Challenge this year, it opens up opportunities for our Special Events staff to work on other projects in 2008,” he continued. “In addition to the JoAnn Falletta International Guitar Concerto Competition in June, WNED will add another event to its roster of membership & community activities.
