East Aurora’s Main Street
It runs east and west, straight through the entire village: East Aurora’s Main Street. It’s just a street right? Wrong. When Mary Flickinger and Lisa Hoffman volunteered for the “Our Town” project, they had strong feelings about what topic they wanted to cover.
“We chose Main Street because it is the heart of our community”, Mary remarked, “Without Main Street, there would be no East Aurora.”
Mary and Lisa videotaped several views of Main Street, including beautiful homes, the Roycroft Campus, several unique shops and restaurants, meticulously restored buildings, and new development. They were also careful not to forget some of the detail that makes Main Street special, like the handmade wood trash receptacles and the hand-painted fire hydrants you will find lining the street.
“ Main Street, for us, provides a great centerpiece for our town,” Lisa said. “Our schools are located on Main Street, our town and village hall, our library – which draw a lot of residents into the center of town.”
“It’s a gathering place. And in order to have that, you have to have attractive facilities, you have to have interesting cultural things going on, you have to have nice shops and you have to have nice restaurants,” Mary says.
East Aurora’s Main Street has all of that and more. According to Mary, it is the symbol of a community that cares about its future. “I hope that it continues good, planned growth; that it is vibrant and continues to be successful - profitable for the businesses and still gives an enjoyable life to the residents who live so close to Main Street. And the two of them should work together.”
