Director of Fundraising Events

Position Title: Director of Fundraising Events
Reports to: Senior Vice President, Development & Corporate Communications
Status: Full-time, Exempt
Date: June 2015      

Summary

Develops, manages and coordinates all aspects of fundraising ticketed events for WNED | WBFO. The goal of this position is to create new or expand existing event opportunities for viewers/listeners to enjoy. The events are intended to generate revenue for our stations and provide our audience with “insider” access to our business. Each event will complement our public broadcasting programs (TV & Radio). The Director of Fundraising Events will frequently work with other WNED | WBFO departments on each project. These departments include Facilities, Major Gifts, Engineering, Graphics, Volunteer Services, Underwriting & Marketing, TV & Radio staff and others.  In addition to these ticketed events, WNED | WBFO will continue to coordinate member cultivation events (through Major Gifts Dept.) and program previews (through Corporate Communications Dept.). The Director of Fundraising Events will regularly coordinate with these two areas in order to avoid overlap and/or create synergies among events.

II.         Duties and Responsibilities              

  • Coordination and execution of existing ticketed events (45%)

  • Duties include securing venues in both the USA and Canada, working with caterers for food orders and timely delivery, setting ticket prices, managing studio set-up and staging for each event (in-house and alternate venues), crafting promotional materials to sell event, booking talent & negotiating fees (performance artists, appraisers, musicians, lecturers, television and radio personalities, and others), working with volunteers, maintaining accurate computer records of ticket purchasers and prospect lists, and coordinating with key WNED | WBFO departments (as noted above).

These existing ticketed events include:

    • KidFest

      • Once per year in USA – February

      • Once per year in Canada – month TBD

    • Antiques Home Show

      • Once per year in either USA or Canada – May

    • WBFO’s Buffalo Blues Bash

      • Twice per year in USA – April and October

    • JoAnn Falletta International Guitar Concerto Competition

      • Once every other year - June

  • Develop and coordinate new ticketed event opportunities (45%)

  • Duties include creating new relationships with potential partners from around WNY and Southern Ontario, creating and monitoring budgets for new events, researching viability and revenue potential for new events, bringing in appropriate talent/ celebrities for each event, researching and securing new venues in both WNY & Southern Ontario, coordinating calendar of events, and finally coordinating these new events as with “existing” event roster.

  • NPR personality Lecture Series

  • PBS personality Lecture Series

  • What’s Happening Around Western New York – Round Table Series

  • What’s Happening Around Southern Ontario – Round Table Series

  • Tastes of WNY Cooking Demonstrations & Tastings

  • WNED | WBFO Gala

    • Celebrity driven gala around existing television and radio programs OR a current WNED | WBFO production

  • Other Duties as Assigned (10%)

Required qualifications

  • Proven track record of event management & creation

  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, which includes nights, weekends, and extended hours

  • Superior ability to work with a variety of people, organizations, and operate successfully under pressure

  • Must be able to multi-task and manage multiple projects at once

  • Ability to react quickly and decisively to correct problems

  • College degree

Position Summary:
The Director of Broadcasting creates and implements monthly television broadcast schedule based on PBS network program offerings, independent program acquisitions and locally produced programs for WNED and ThinkBright and Well/WORLD.  Supervises Broadcast Operations Manager, Editor/Copywriter and Viewer Services.

Responsibilities include:                                                                                           

35%         Create and implement monthly broadcast schedule including pledge schedule, schedule changes and updates.  Use US and Canadian Nielsen ratings to help in creation of schedule.  Manage and oversee program acquisition budget.  Report on ratings as needed. 

30%        Screen programs from independent producers and distributors, PBS, regional networks, and commercial syndicators for possible broadcast and pledge.

10%        Fundraising activities including Pledge Task Force and on-air talent.            

5%         Select and manage the promotional priorities for the month, and guide the overall direction of station broadcast look and design. 
Coordinate with Corporate Communications and Underwriting Departments as they relate to the TV broadcast schedule. 

10%        Supervise Broadcast Operations Manager and Editor / Copywriter             
and manage overall department.

5%         Network with professional peers to insure most innovative and creative TV broadcast schedule.

5%         Oversee WNED TV Viewer Services and participate in U.S./Canadian Border Station Consortium activities. 

Qualifications and Education Required:

  • Five years experience in public television programming with at least three years in a supervisory role.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Nielsen audience research data withability to analyze and evaluate.
  • Knowledge and understanding of word processing and computer skills.
  • Effective communication skills necessary.
  • College degree required.

Position Title:              Director of Leadership Circle & Founder’s Society

Department:                Major Gifts

Reports to:                  Senior Vice President, Development & Corporate Communications

Status:                         Full-Time, Exempt

I. Summary

Sustain and grow WNED | WBFO’s Major Gifts program supporting WNED TV, Classical 94.5 WNED,  WBFO-FM 88.7 and ThinkBright & Well/ WORLD in all Western New York and Southern Ontario communities. Work with Senior Vice President at WNED | WBFO, and with major gifts representative at PBS Corporate to develop and expand our Planned Giving (Legacy) program (which includes the Foundation website, on-air appeals, various print material, and yearly events). Work closely with (major gift) Events Manager on the execution of multiple donor events in Western New York and Southern Ontario. Cultivate relationships with individual donors and provide “concierge level” service to WNED | WBFO contributors in various donor groups. Initiate and maintain relationships with other non-profit organizations for project collaborations. Lastly, Director works with various staff on company Capital Campaigns (as applicable).

 

II. Duties & Responsibilities                                                                                                      Monthly % of Time

 

Sustain and grow   the Major Gifts (individual giving)   program. This includes the following donor clubs:  Founder’s Society ($300 - $999), the Leadership Circle ($1000 - $2,499), Benefactor’s Society ($2,500 - $4,999), and President’s Council ($5,000 +).

Duties include:

      
  • Developing print and online        solicitation materials, identifying new and cultivating current        prospects, stewarding current major donors, and managing all        communications.
      
  • Responsible for meeting or exceeding        annual goals and managing major gifts/planned giving budgets.
      
  • Also responsible for keeping        up-to-date on tax laws/ restrictions which impact giving patterns of        donors at higher giving and legacy levels.
      
  • Provides “concierge level” service to        members of various donor clubs.

50%

Develop   and expand a formal Planned Giving (Legacy) program. This includes:

  • Working in   conjunction with Senior Director, Fundraising & Special Projects for   on-air spot acquisition, creation and broadcast.
  • Coordinate with   Project Director, Planned Giving at PBS Corporate to make sure WNED | WBFO is   involved in national projects. Keep up to date with PBS Corporate re: current   research on donor giving trends.
  • Monitor and   coordinate updates (as necessary) to the WNED | WBFO Foundation website.   Create print and online materials about the Legacy program.
  • Coordinate   yearly events with major gifts Events Manager which target potential Planned   Giving donors and provide information about the program.
  • Keep up-to-date   on new tax laws/ restrictions which impact   donor options to planned giving programs.
  • Work may sometimes include working with a WNED   Board Committee to evaluate on-going activities and coordinate peer   solicitation to target potential prospects

Work with Capital Campaign team to achieve   campaign cultivation and revenue goals.

Pursue funding opportunities from individuals to   support special projects as needed. Other duties as assigned to further the   mission and goals of WNED | WBFO.

III. Qualifications and Education Required

 

  • Bachelor’s degree required, plus relevant professional development experience gained from a responsible position at another non-profit organization
  • Demonstrated success in Major Gift development
  • Superior verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to meet deadlines
  • Flexibility in work hours is required as this position sometimes works non-traditional business hours (nights and/or weekends attending various events)
  • Ability to work effectively both alone and as part of a team
  • Some travel to Canada required

The reporter will also be trained to serve as a fill-in anchor.

Duties and Responsibilities:                                                                       

  1. Serves as general assignment spot news reporter, researching, interviewing, writing and producing content.                                         

            2.   Responsible for producing/writing/updating station’s website.                

            3.   Performs other general newsrooms tasks that include making check calls, following up on stories, updating files and fielding phone calls.              

 

Qualifications and Education Required:

  • Three years of reporting experience.
  • Solid news judgment.
  • Strong writing skills.
  • Authoritative, conversational on-air delivery.
