Celebrating the 50th anniversary of Terry Riley’s seminal "In C "and the 150th anniversary of Brahms’s "String Sextet in G, Opus 36" the program for the season opening concert by the Buffalo Chamber Players (Wednesday 9/17 at 7:30pm at Buffalo Seminary) also includes works by composers-in-residence Rob Deemer and Caroline Mallonée. WNED's Peter Hall spoke with BCP Artistic Director (and violist) Janz Castelo and Ms. Mallonée about music as well as raising kids in the city of Buffalo.
Her parents brought her to Kleinhans Music Hall when she was a little girl, and now Gabrielle (Gigi) Monachino is a very accomplished violinist with her own "Lilac Piano Trio." They'll perform for a private dinner reception prior to the BPO's opening night gala, and a number of her coaches from the "Bravo Chamber Music" program (all members of the BPO) will be justifiably proud. WNED's Peter Hall spoke with Gigi and was happy to use the trio's CD for music to accompany the conversation.
"America's Soprano," Renée Fleming opens this season's Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra classics series on Saturday night, September 13th, at Kleinhans, JoAnn Falletta conducting. Having recently turned 50, Renée's not slowing down, at all. She'll be singing a new role for her, "Hannah," in Lehar's The Merry Widow at the Met, she's trying her hand at producing an opera at the Lyric Opera of Chicago based on Ann Patchett's book Bel Canto, she took a role in straight theater in a play "Living on Love" this summer at the Williamstown Theater Festival, she was recently at the White House, she sang the U.S. National Anthem at the last Superbowl and was also on Letterman! There were lots of things to talk about with WNED's Peter Hall.
Hear Italian opera favorites sung by Italians and SUNY Fredonia faculty this Sunday September 6th at 3:30 at the Friends of Vienna recital in the Unity Church, 1243 Delaware Avenue in Buffalo. If you like composers whose names end in the letter "i" (think Vivaldi, Donizetti, Bellini) this will be a vocal delight. It's a special concert, before the regular concert season begins. SUNY Fredonia's Julie Newell, soprano, spoke with WNED's Peter Hall.
Film-maker Mary Wall is finishing up a true Buffalo documentary, all about the Buffalo Sabres, the teams heartbreaks and triumphs, and their die-hard Buffalo fans. For several years now Mary has been filming the individual stories, the ups and downs, and struggles of 12 of those fans, including young opera singer James Wright, who spoke with WNED’s Peter Hall about a special evening, Tuesday, September 9th at 7:30pm at the newly restored North Park Theater on Hertel Avenue. It’s a chance to find out about the documentary, share in some fans' and enjoy some music sung by Wright as well as Doug Allen, who sings the National Anthems at home games.
