Leon Botstein, academic, historian, scholar, writer, musicologist, and innovator, is in Buffalo (one of his favorite cities) not only to conduct the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra but also to speak at the Albright Knox Art Gallery this Friday night at 7pm on the topic of "Arts, Justice, and Innovation.” WNED found out more.
One musical surprise follows another this Friday evening, May 8th at 8pm when "A Musical Feast" presents mezzo-soprano Julia Bentley at the Burchfield Penney Art Center. Charles Ives' songs in French! Romantic German lieder by famed pianist Artur Schnabel! Contemporary women composer Ruth Wiesenfeld and a dance inspired by Buffalo based Esin Gunduz! In a series known for eclecticism, this final concert of the season may be the most ecumenical yet. WNED spoke with Julia Bentley while she was baking banana bread.
If "frullato" sounds like something you'd get at a coffee or ice cream shop, then you'll want to be at Kleinhans Music Hall this Friday morning at 10:30am or Saturday at 8:00pm when BPO Principal Hornist Jacek Muzyk plays Penderecki's Horn Concerto "Winterreise" using a variety of cool techniques including actually singing into the horn and "frullato." Find out more in this WNED conversation with Jacek (actually "Dr. Muzyk, Ph.D.")!
Building on the concept of synergy, Lewiston based poet Robert Giannetti and Buffalo based violist Leslie Bahler bring together words and music. Their program of about 16 poems and musical examples will be in Youngstown, Saturday, April 25th at 7pm at the First Presbyterian Church of Youngstown. In the conversation we hear how this collaboration came to be along with two examples of poetry and music.
Pianist Yoonie Han plays Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 1 with the BPO this Friday morning at Saturday night. In this conversation she talks about differences – between the young and older Chopin, between the Juilliard and Curtis music programs, and between this concert and the last time she arrived in Buffalo but her luggage didn’t (don’t worry, JoAnn Falletta took care of her).
