American Experience: The Vote

Virtual Screening and Discussion

Join us on Thursday, June 25, at 3 pm via Ovee, for a sneak peak of the newest documentary series — American Experience: The Vote. The Vote tells the dramatic story of the epic crusade arranged by American women for the right to vote.

After the screening, we invite you to stick around for a panelist discussion with Sally Roesch, Ph.D. and Lillian S. Williams, PhD, who will lead a conversation about this movement and answer your questions. Sally Roesch, Ph.D., is the Executive Director of the Matilda Joslyn Gage Foundation, is a women's rights activist in Syracuse, New York, and has written several books on the suffrage movement. Lillian S. Williams, PhD, is Associate Professor and former chair of the Department of African American Studies at University at Buffalo. Her research includes Mary Burnett Talbert, an early twentieth century reformer who was instrumental in organizing black women in the region to fight for their rights, and tried to work with white suffragists to gain the vote.

One hundred years after the passage of the 19th Amendment, The Vote tells the dramatic culmination story of the hard-fought campaign waged by American women for the right to vote — a transformative, cultural, and political movement that resulted in the largest expansion of voting rights in US history.

Focusing primarily on the movement's militant and momentous final decade, the film charts American women's determined march to the ballot box. The Vote delves deeply into the controversies that divided the nation in the early 20th century — gender, race, state's rights, and political power — and offers an absorbing lesson in the dynamics of social change.

American Experience’s The Vote airs on WNED PBS July 6-7 at 9 pm.
