WBFO Hosts StoryCorps Visit to Buffalo

StoryCorps partnered with WBFO-FM 88.7 to record, preserve and share the stories of Buffalo, New York.

The StoryCorps mobile recording unit—a modified Windstream trailer—was parked at Canalside for a month-long visit in September 2016, as part of a cross-country MobileBooth tour.

Founded in 2003 by award-winning documentary producer and MacArthur fellow Dave Isay, StoryCorps has traveled to every corner of the country to record interviews in the organization’s effort to create a world where people listen closely to each other and recognize the beauty, grace and poetry in the lives and stories found everywhere

Participants — in sets of two — recorded a meaningfulconversation about who they are, what they’ve learned in life and how they want to be remembered.  At the end of the 40 minute recording session participants received a free CD copy of their interview, and, with their permission, a second copy will be archived at the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress for future generations.

Edited excerpts from some of the recordings will air on WBFO, as well as on NPR’s national programs.

This is StoryCorps’ second visit to Buffalo, following a visit eight years ago. Since the project started in 2003, StoryCorps has collected and archived more than 66,000 stories from throughout the nation.
