Buffalo Toronto Public Media Community Challenge - Five Star Bank

On Tuesday, March 5th, 2019 Five Star Bank pledged to match all donations given to Buffalo Toronto Public Media with a matching gift to The Teacher’s Desk up to $12,000.

Buffalo Toronto Public Media and Five Star Bank teamed up in this Community Challenge to inspire Western New York and Southern Ontario to make a difference for their public broadcasting stations while also providing free school supplies to students in need. The Teacher’s Desk is the store where teachers shop free for books, school supplies and teacher resources in their classrooms throughout Western New York.

Since October 2011, The Teacher’s Desk has distributed more than 10 million dollars of supplies and resources to teachers at schools in need throughout Western New York. At The Teacher’s Desk, every $10 received enables one teacher to shop for $1,000 in free school supplies and books.

The Community Challenge is a program in which Buffalo Toronto Public Media teams up with a corporation to inspire the community to give.

Buffalo Toronto Public Media uses the challenges on its radio and TV stations. The day-long event educates the community about the chosen charity, while soliciting donations to the stations. Each gift to the stations is then matched by the corporate partner and given to the charity, effectively doubling donors’ impact on the community. The first Community Challenge debuted in November 2018 and was a great success.
